Blackstone Expands Its Portfolio with Bitcoin ETF Investment
Blackstone, known as the world's largest alternative asset manager, made headlines with its first-ever crypto-related investment. The company disclosed its purchase of shares in BlackRock's spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF). The investment, totaling around $1.08 million, is a fraction of Blackstone's massive $1.2 trillion portfolio. As of March 31, Blackstone held 23,094 shares of BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT).
The IBIT shares were added to Blackstone's Alternative Multi-Strategy Fund (BTMIX), which boasts $2.63 billion worth of assets according to Google Finance data. In addition to the BlackRock investment, Blackstone also acquired shares in crypto ATM operator Bitcoin Depot Inc. (BTM) and the ProShares Bitcoin ETF (BITO).
Despite being an alternative asset manager, Blackstone had previously shown reluctance towards crypto investments. The company's CEO, Steve Schwarzman, expressed skepticism about blockchain technology's use for money, citing his preference for traditional currency control. Schwarzman admitted to not having much interest in cryptocurrencies, citing difficulties understanding the technology.
Blackstone is known for its diverse investment portfolio, which includes private equity, real estate, credit, infrastructure, hedge funds, and insurance solutions. The company had $37 billion worth of investable capital as of March 31, according to its website.
BlackRock's IBIT Continues to Draw Investor Interest
BlackRock's Bitcoin fund, IBIT, has been attracting steady investor inflows, with no outflows recorded in the past six weeks. The fund has seen a 20-trading-day streak of inflows, bringing its total net inflows to over $46.1 billion since its launch in January 2024. In comparison, other Bitcoin funds like the Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC) and the ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF (ARK) have seen lower net inflows.
The consistent investor interest in BlackRock's IBIT reflects the growing demand for cryptocurrency exposure among institutional investors. With the crypto market gaining mainstream acceptance, more traditional financial institutions are exploring opportunities in the digital asset space.
Overall, Blackstone's foray into the crypto market with its Bitcoin ETF investment signals a shift in the company's strategy towards embracing digital assets. As the cryptocurrency market continues to evolve and mature, we can expect more institutional investors like Blackstone to enter the space, driving further adoption and growth.
